Grandparents Day

Every September, on the Sunday after Labor Day, millions of Americans celebrate National Grandparents Day. It's a day to honor your family, as well as express our love and respect for our elders. This means acknowledging the elderly in nursing homes who have no family or can't be with the ones they love. Find out about this unique holiday here!

The Story Behind the Holiday

The lady behind the holiday is West Virginia housewife, and mother to 15 children, Marian McQuade. In 1970, she started a campaign to set aside a special day for grandparents. She had worked with seniors for many years and wanted them to have their own day. It took three years, and the support of churches, businesses and politicians but Marian got her wish. The first Grandparents Day was in 1973. Then Marian turned to the media to help spread the news about this new observance. Five years and many letters and phone calls later, Grandparents Day became an official holiday.

Things to Do

If you have grandparents, go and spend the day with them this weekend. If you don't have grandparents, adopt some. There are lonely, elderly people in nursing homes that would love your company. Check out www.grandparents-day.com for more ideas and information about the holiday.

Tell us about your grandparents. Do they try and fatten you up or make you stand up straight? Drop us a line.
