Do you dig hip-hop music and mixing records? What about artists like Dilated Peoples, Mary J. Blige and Sasha and John Digweed? These modern day artists owe a lot to DJ Grandmaster Flash and Kidzworld was there to check out his Flash is Back Tour.
Grandmaster Flash, the master of hip-hop, spun non-stop grooves that had the crowd bouncing on the floor and forming break dance circles. The night was filled with retro '70s grooves that were so funky they'd make John Travolta wish he could still fit into his bum-hugging, bellbottomed Saturday Night Fever suit! Flash also cut into '80s vinyl by Michael Jackson (the really funky stuff) and pumped-up the crowd by working his magic on Queen's Another One Bites the Dust and Nu Shooz's I Can't Wait.
Grandmaster Flash doesn't just work old-skool vinyl - he dives into the '90s with tunes like House of Pain's Jump Around, Naughty By Nature and other well-known hip-hoppers. After all, Flash wants to be seen as an ALL-SKOOL DJ, not a DJ who's limited to one era or style of music. That's why he digs into grooves from the past and the present. Flash worked the audience on the mic too and when he told the crowd to sing or wave their hands - a sea of hands waved. Some fans had such a groove on that they jumped up on-stage and showed off their moves until security quickly escorted them off.
Watching Grandmaster Flash, who started DJing in the '70s, I knew I was witnessing one of the great pioneers of hip-hop. It was a pretty cool night - fab tunes, a great crowd vibe and over two hours of fun. The Flash is definitely back and in full effect!
