GenCon 2001 Wrap Up

Dec 27, 2006

When GenCon comes to Milwaukee the whole city rocks. Gamers flood the streets, fill the hotels and scarf all the food for four days. It was time for them to hang with other gamers, chat about the latest games and play, play, play. Here's a breakdown of the biggest things that happened this year.

Wizards of the Coast are the guys behind the whole event so they get a monster castle and tons of space to show off all their toys and games. Their Harry Potter Trading Card Game appeared in public for the first time and kidz dueled like wizards with the hot new game. NFL Showdown 2002 blitzed into GenCon at full force. Look for both of these games coming soon to a store near you.

The second biggest display was Mage Knight. Mage Knight is all about little plastic figures going to battle. It's like playing war with cool action figures that have rules about how they fight. The miniatures look wicked and they're ready for use right out of the box. So you can pick some up and start kicking butt right away rather than having to paint them first. The Mage Knight booth dudes and dudettes went all out with demos, prizes and giveaways. Yours truly even scored a couple boxes of the cool little critters.

The rest of the huge convention area was loaded with games, artwork, gamers and more. There were tournaments where super-gamers could show off their mad skills for prizes and fun. Costume competitions brought hardcore costumes - stormtroopers, jedi knights, princesses, space men and klingons. Special events could score you a prize for doing an "evil dance" and a bunch of nutcases spent the weekend putting on swordfighting demos with foam swords. Check reality at the door boys and girls, GenCon is seriously warped fun.
