N'dambi Interview

Birthplace: Dallas, Texas

N’dambi is touring North America to promote her new album, Pink Elephant. Kidzworld got a chance to sit down and talk to N’dambi about touring, storytelling and mingling with the crowd.

Strong Storyteller

N’dambi graduated from Southern Methodist University with a degree in English and Creative writing, so Kidzworld asked if her educational background helps with her songwriting. N;dambi’s response was an emphatic yes. “Definitely,” she said. “I think of time, place and setting when I write my songs. What’s important to me is to paint a picture so that people can find their truth. I don’t know everyone’s story, but I try to observe life and see what it means to me. Then I write songs and hope other people can find themselves in that.”

Fan Favorite

And N’dambi is there for those fans who really feel something in her music. “I’m definitely one of those people who’s going to mingle with the crowd,” she says. “I usually try to stay after shows and meet and greet folks.”

Did You Know?

  • N’dambi is good friends with Erykah Badu. N’dambi says Badu “likes to laugh and play and joke—she’s a well-rounded person.”
  • Her two favorite writers are Zora Neale Hurston (who wrote Their Eyes Were Watching God) and Octavia Butler (who won the MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Grant).
  • N’dambi’s interest in storytelling goes beyond songwriting. She likes fiction and novels so much that she says, “Hopefully one day I’ll write a book!”
  • N’dambi doesn’t have a dream list of collaborators. Instead, she just wants to work with “anyone who’s hungry about making music.”

If I had to make simple choice, I'd prefer to live in It's Kind of a Funny Story simply for the people who were held in it. Despite the location setting for the story, I feel as if I could very easily fall for the characters all over again, especially in an even more personal matter. But, of course, if I was  going with a straight up fantasy like everyone seems to be, I'd most likely go with a world like Dorthy Must Die series or Alice in Wonderland. Both being these magical worlds filled with quirky creatures and people, so how could you get bored? Oh, and of course let us not forget the plenty of harrowing fight scenes for freedom from the evil queens and her many brainless followers.

The Iron Giant was way too advanced in some ways to be a child's movie, yet it was.

I would live in The Outsiders because it's a classic book. I would love to go on adventures with the gang and read books and watch movies with Ponyboy. (Because I too always believed I was the only one who enjoyed them.) I would love to open up to Johnny because he is such a kind hearted soul.
