If you have played any of the LEGO games so far, from the Star Wars games that started the series to the more recent Batman and Indiana Jones game, you should know pretty much what to expect from LEGO Harry Potter. You will be destroying pretty much everything as you go through the story of Harry Potter in your quest to collect studs and mini-kits. There will be drop-in/drop-out co-op and things to unlock. However, LEGO Harry Potter still manages to have some wow factor hidden up its sleeve.
Magic in the Making
Harry Potter may be the best LEGO so far and LEGO Harry Potter may be the best Harry Potter game so far. Selecting and using spells to get through the levels works so well and really makes the game fun and interesting to play, working much better than Batman suits and switching characters in previous games.
Speaking of characters, LEGO Harry Potter covers the first four books/movies in the series, from the Sorcerer's Stone to the Goblet of Fire. The studs you collect on each level can be used to unlock over 160 characters, every one from Ron to Krum as a shark. You can replay levels using any character and a friend can join anytime to help you. Split screen co-op means you will never accidently pull someone to their death again!
No Tricks Here
Unfortunately, multiplayer is only local. The co-op for Xbox 360 and PS3 is expected to be available as a patch in the coming months. Platforming, combat and AI in the game is only ok, but it is still better than previous LEGO games.
What has really improved is the humor. Even if you are not a big Harry Potter fan, you'll get a kick out of this game. The shifty, twisty Hogwarts is really amazing. Highly recommended.
