Smoosh! Bio

Jul 10, 2018

Smoosh is what you do to insects you don’t like, right? Well, not for sisters Asya, Chloe and Maia—Smoosh is the name of their band, these sisters have been making music together since before they were teenagers, and with three critically acclaimed albums under their belt, we’d say they’re doing pretty well! Find out more!

Born This Way

Smoosh’s parents were not musical, their dad is a medical researcher and their mum is a paediatrician, but somehow there’s music running in the family!

Eldest sister Asya (or as she likes to be called, Asy) was writing songs and playing piano since she was very small, and her sister Chloe was also musically talented, so one day the whole family went down to one of Seattle’s biggest music stores The Trading Musician to re-string a violin. Asy and Chloe wandered into the drum section of the store and that was the last they ever heard of the violin! The family walked out with a $600 drum set for Chloe and drummer Jason McGerr (from Deathcab for Cutie) met the girls there and offered to teach Chloe to play the drums and help them both read music—Smoosh was born!

Two Girls and Tomato Mistakes

After Jason helped the girls form Smoosh, they put out an EP in 2000m that they mailed free of charge to anyone who would listen, it was called Tomato Mistakes! Asy played keyboards and did lead vocals while Chloe played drums and did back-up vocals. By the time Asy was 12 years old and Chloe was ten (in 2004), they had released their first full length album: She Like Electric. And every song was written by Asy and performed by the two of them. Critics in music circles loved the girls and compared them to singers like Tori Amos.

Sign Me Up

When Smoosh’s second album came out in 2006, called Free To Stay, they were picked up by a label in their hometown of Seattle called Barstuk Records. After that they started touring with famous indie bands like Bloc Party, and going to huge festivals, like Lollapalooza in 2007. They also gained one more member—their youngest sister Maia! Maia plays bass guitar, adding a new element to their songs. Last summer the girls released their latest album, Withershins.

If you’ve never had a chance to listen to Smoosh’s beautiful vocals and sweet songs, here’s your chance to get caught up—listen here!

Did You Know…

  • The sisters never give out their last name in interviews
  • All three girls are reported to be vegetarians
  • One of the reasons Asy couldn’t read music when she was young (even though she wrote songs) is because she thought piano lessons were “boring.”
  • The youngest sister in the family is named Scout, maybe she’ll join the band one day!
