America's Next Top Model: Cycle 17, Episode 2 :: Ashlee Simpson

Sep 22, 2011

This week on America’s Next Top Model Cycle 17, the all-stars get makeovers (a.k.a Ty-overs!) and learn all about branding! Episode 2, which featured guest judge Ashlee Simpson, aired on September 21, 2011.

Building a Brand

Tyra introduced the girls to Martin Lindstrom, an author and brand consultant. He taught them how to build a brand based on their personalities. He surveyed fans to find out what image each of the girls represents and assigned them a word that would become their new brand:

  • Lisa – Daring
  • Sheena – Unexpected
  • Kayla – Free
  • Shannon – Trustworthy
  • Dominique – Survivor
  • Allison – Unique
  • Angelea – Persistence
  • Bre – Girlfriend
  • Camille – Proud
  • Isis – Inspiration
  • Laura – Lovable
  • Alexandria – Tough
  • Bianca – Candid

Makeovers

Afterwards, the girls received makeovers in preparation for their photo shoot. Bre was distraught about her new short hairdo, while Alexandria embraced hers with happy tears.

Pink's Hotdog

In their photo shoot, the girls posed for a Pink’s Hotdog ad, keeping their brand in mind. This was challenging for some girls whose words weren’t easy to portray in a photo. Lisa embodied “daring” perfectly, which wasn’t too difficult. Her shot landed her best photo at panel.

Elimination

In the end, both Kayla, who struggled with her word “free;” and Sheena, who isn’t photogenic enough to be a model, were on the chopping block. Knowing Kayla’s history of amazing photos, Tyra and the judges decided to keep her in the competition and send Sheena home.

Have Your Say

Do you think it's fair that some girls were given easier words than others, like Lisa's "daring"? Which girl would you have sent home this week? Tell us in our comments section below!

It included a lot of mature themes and it really connects with today's older youth. You mean violence wise? Not just that, but the show tells the stories of the characters finding themselves. Take Asami for example. A lot of people have a late relative and another relative involved in some kind of trouble. She had her relationships AND family business to take care of, which relates to some of today's youth who feel like they have the whole world on their shoulders. They're starting to have to take responsibility for things they can hardly manage, and seeing the triumph of a character like Asami is truly inspiring. Her mother's dead, her father's in prison, her boyfriend was stolen from her, and her business nearly failed. But she did not give up, which sends a positive message to today's generation of teens. Mako was not stolen from Asami he just chose Korra and everyone knows that thats what people wanted. As messed up as that sounds its the truth.
