Melanie B. Hot CD Review

2001 (Virgin)

Mel C and Emma aren't the only Spice Girls going solo these days. Melanie B. - a.k.a. Scary Spice - released her first solo CD called Hot in March 2001. It's too soon to tell if fans agree with the title.

Besides her crazy curls, Mel also toned down the Spice Girl's dance sound giving her solo project more of a soulful groove. But soul shouldn't be boring. The first single Feels So Good sounds like your basic pop song except it's missing the catchy chorus that usually makes a song "pop." I couldn't help think Feels So Good was trying to ride the wave of Jennifer Lopez's hit Feelin' So Good. On a more original note, check out the previously released funky song, I Want You Back featuring rap queen Missy Elliot.

Most of the songs are about relationships gone wrong with that girl power edge from one of the original "girl power" trend setters. Other somewhat memorable songs on the CD are the light-hearted Lullaby and the upbeat Step Inside. Unfortunately most of the CD is made up of forgettable love ballads. Sorry Mel B, Spice is nice, so you might want to think twice about doin' your own thing permanently.
