Wolf Brother is the first book in Michelle Paver's new series, Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. The series is set 6,000 years ago and focuses on the story of Torak, a young member of the Wolf Clan who suddenly must fend for himself when his father is killed by a demon bear. Read on to find out if this is the book for you!

Destiny Calls

Just before Torak's dad, Fa, is killed by a giant demon bear, Fa makes Torak promise to find the Mountain of the World Spirit. Only this will help to save the rest of mankind. Torak is confused by Fa's request, but promises he will find the Mountain or die trying.

New Friends, New Enemies

Alone in the world, Torak begins his journey towards the Mountain of the World Spirit. Along the way a young wolf cub whose family has been killed in [kwlink]a flood[/kwlink] befriends Torak. Soon Torak realizes that he is able to speak to the young wolf and believes the cub to be his Guide for his journey. Wolf and Torak are doing well until a group from the Raven Clan captures them both and accuses Torak of stealing their buck. The Clan soon come to believe that Torak is The Listener - the one who is destined to destroy the demon bear.

Danger Ahead

Torak has never heard of The Prophecy of The Listener, but the more he hears of it, the more he believes that they are right - he is The Listener and only he can help to save the world. But, he cannot let the Clan leaders decide what to do with him so he escapes, with the help of a young Raven Clan girl named Renn. Now the real mission begins.

The Bottom Line

Wolf Brother is a magical tale that pulls you back to a time when there were no TVs, no internet, not even conventional medicine that we all rely on today. Torak must make his way to the Mountain without a compass, which means he must rely only on what he has been taught about tracking. He must find all his own food, make his own fire and tend to his wounds with medicinal herbs found within the forest. Wolf Brother is a tale that is inspiring and entertaining. You'll be eagerly awaiting the next book in the series once you're done.
