In my opinion, in the Christian Faith, souls are pretty much us as pure as we can be, until Jesus comes again and brings us back, that is truly what eternal life is. I haven't done enough scientific research to argue my opinion through scientific terms, but I do feel like I'm confident to talk about it philosophically, and using Religious scriptures to support my arguments.
According to the story of Adam and Eve, God gave Adam a soul. It was described as "breathing life into Adam." This was a mistranslation, and was supposed to say "gave Adam a soul", or something like that.
A soul is vital, and everyone has one. In Religious terms, we cannot function without a soul. A soul is what we need to believe in God, it gives us our faith. Scientifically, we are organic machines, built to survive and adapt. Our soul separates us from that. It gives us our emotions (in Religious terms, not scientifically.) without, a soul, we wouldn't function properly, we wouldn't be rational, and have morals. We wouldn't know what was right from wrong, we wouldn't even have faith in God. So, the soul itself is a vital spiritual organ. Sort of a spiritual brain.
