R.L. Stine's Mostly Ghostly DVD Review

From the brain behind Goosebumps comes the story of a kid whose ability to talk to ghosts might mean the difference between being cool and being a loser in his school. Kidzworld gets spooky with Mostly Ghostly.
Magic Man
Max Doyle is a
magician and a
geek with very few friends at school, and a dad and brother who think he should spend less time doing tricks and more time
playing sports. At the same time, Max is
hearing whispers coming from his family’s walls, whispers that sound like
ghosts. But no one’s about believe that—not from the
weirdest kid in school, anyway!
Spirited Away
Turns out, the weird kid was right—
there are ghosts! Two of them in fact, Tara and Nicky Roland, and they used to live in Max’s house. That is, before they and their
ghost hunter parents were turned into ghouls themselves. The Rolands were sent away by a bunch of
angry spirits and their leader, the ultra evil Phears, and the only way to find them is through a secret tunnel in the Doyles’ basement. But they need the help of a
living friend to get into the tunnel…and that friend is
Max.
Too Ghoul for School
While Max is busy getting ready for his school
talent show, the evil Phears steals Tara. Max heads down the tunnel to try to save her, but she gives him a
magic ring and tells him he must return, because on
Halloween Phears will be at his full powers. At the talent show Max gets some
ghostly help from Nicky, but is magic enough to keep Phears and his ghastly crew from taking over? Can Max save Tara and find the Rolands? And will Max
ever be cool?
DVD Features
Nothing, aside from a choice between
widescreen and
full screen. There’s nothing
spooky about that!
Boo-ring!
Bottom Line
The
Mostly Ghostly book series was crazy popular, so this first
movie adaptation has the potential to become a
whole series of movies. Like lots of
R.L. Stine’s stuff, it’s
scary and funny at the same time. And with a cast that includes Ali
Lohan and Noah
Cyrus, the movie is good fun with some big names.
