So You Think You Can Dance :: Top 18

This week on So You Think You Can Dance, the top 18 couples performed everything from disco to the tango. By the end of the night, three couples received negative comments from the judges, carving out an obvious bottom three.

Performances

  • Randi and Evan opened the show with the jive choreographed by Louis Van Amstel. The judges dubbed them the perfect couple for the jive, yet their performance fell a little short. Overall, they called their dancing really good but a little sloppy.

  • Melissa and Ade landed a funky jazz routine choreographed by Sonya. The judges loved their performance, and guest judge Lil C predicted that Ade will be a threat in this year’s competition.

  • Caitlin and Jason fell flat with one of Shane Sparks’s hip-hop routines. Unimpressed, the judges felt that they weren’t in sync with their dance moves.

  • Jeanette and Brandon performed the fastest disco that the judges had ever seen. Choreographer Doriana Sanchez decided to challenge the couple with the unusually quick tempo, and they pulled it off brilliantly.

  • Asuka and Vitolio danced an elegant Waltz choreographed by Louis Van Amstel. After being in the bottom three last week, the couple gave it everything they had. And their elegance brought Mary Murphy to tears.

  • Kayla and Max danced a spicy pop-jazz routine choreographed by Brian Friedman. The judges thought they nailed their performance, but felt Kayla outshined Max.

  • Karla and Jonathan performed a spellbinding contemporary routine created by a Canadian choreographer, Stacy Tookey. The judges were in awe of their performance, and Mary felt that Jonathan danced contemporary better than his own genre.

  • Philip and Jeanine tangled the Tango by Tony Meredith. The judges gave them an A+ in attitude, but a whopping C- in technique.

  • Ashley and Kupono closed the night with this week’s second Shane Sparks hip-hop routine. The judges didn’t hate it, but they didn’t love it either. They felt underwhelmed, and dismissed their performance as unmemorable.

  • Elimination Results

The clear cut bottom three turned out to be a shocker when Ashley and Max were sent to dance for their lives along with Caitlin and Jason, and Ashley and Kupono. The judges weren’t unanimous on their decision to send Ashley and Max home. Next week, Kayla and Kupono will team up as a brand new couple.
