Stephanie Gilmore - Growing UpGrowing up by Australia's famous Gold Coast, it was inevitable that Stephanie would take an interest in surfing. With the encouragement of her dad, she first picked up a board at the age of 10. A natural at the sport, Stephanie spent a lot of the next few years surfing some of Australia's best waves. By the time she was 16, she was the Australian and Quiksilver Under-18 ISA World Junior Champion. She skyrocketed to fame when she won the opening ASP World Tour event at the Gold Coast in 2005. Only 17 years old at the time, she easily dominated her much older competition.
Stephanie Gilmore - Rising StarStephanie Gilmore has been the number one ranked surfer in the world in 2007. She won the Rip Curl Women's Pro in April and in July 2007, Stephanie won the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California. She is also the top-ranked surfer going into the 2007 Summer X-Games in Puerto Escondido, Mexico.
