The Bachelorette 5 :: Episode 2

May 29, 2009

It’s the second week of season 5 and already the men are showing their feisty sides. Feuds are flaring between the 20 hopefuls as they fight for Jillian Harris’s heart. There were three dates this week, two group dates and a one-on-one date.

The Race for Jillian’s Heart

The first group date began with a pool party but ended in a high-speed race for Jillian’s affection. Divided into pairs, Michael, Brian, Brad, Sasha, Tanner P, Wes, Ed and Mathue raced around Los Angeles, following the flags leading them to Jillian. Brad and Wes arrived first, and Jillian chose Wes for a private dinner inside an old bank vault. Jillian felt a strong connection to the cute cowboy and gave him a rose, keeping him safe from elimination.

The Genuine Gentleman

Jillian chose Jake, the pilot, for the first one-on-one date. Already attracted to his good looks and genuine charm, Jillian wanted to find the wild side in Jake. Dressed in their hoedown gear, Jillian brought Jake to the House of Blues—a country bar reserved for the two of them. Jake impressed Jillian by revealing his emotions. Then she surprised him with a private performance by country singer, Martina McBride[/kwlink]. In the end, Jillian gave Jake the second date rose.

A Game with the Globetrotters

The second group date was all about the guys. Jillian brought Jesse, Mark, David, Mike, Simon, Kiptyn and Juan to an outdoor basketball court, where she and her team of Harlem Globetrotters challenged them to a game. Afterwards, Mike decided to show his spontaneous side. He stripped down to a Speedo and jumped in the ocean, an act that won him the third date rose. Later on, David shared his negative feelings toward Juan with the group.

The Rose Ceremony

During the evening before the rose ceremony, Chris Harrison (the host) added a shocking twist to the competition. All the guys had to anonymously vote for which guy they felt should be sent home. Juan received the most votes, leaving him at Jillian’s mercy. But she used her power of veto to give him a rose and secure his spot in the competition. In the end, four guys were sent home: Mattue, Brian, Julien and Simon.
